The second BIRN Summer School of Investigative Reporting will take place at the Hotel Palace – Bellevue and ICEJ – International Centre for Education of Journalists, both in the centre of Opatija, Croatia. Hotel is just along Opatija’s central beach. This venue is one of the oldest and most beautiful hotels on the Opatija Riviera.
Travelling to Opatija
Via Rijeka
Rijeka offers the closets airport and is around 12km from Opatija.
You can take a taxi, with a one-way journey costing up to €20.
You can also take a bus from Rijeka to Opatija, with services running every half an hour.
Via Zagreb
You can also travel via Zagreb Airport, taking an onward bus to Rijeka and then Opatija. There is a direct bus route from Zagreb Airport to Rijeka. Please find details below:
Zagreb Airport (ZAG) is at Pleso, 17km southeast of the city centre. ZAG has only one terminal, but major expansion is currently underway and is scheduled for completion during 2011 (meaning that construction may be underway when you arrive).
Transfer from the Zagreb airport
- By road: Take route 30 directly into Zagreb city centre
- By taxi: A taxi from the airport to central Zagreb can cost from €35, depending on the time of day (evenings, Sundays and holidays are more expensive).
- By bus to Zagreb: The airport bus leaves every half an hour and takes 25 minutes to reach Zagreb bus station. Single tickets cost €5.
- By bus to Rijeka: A daily bus service from Zagreb Airport to Rijeka departs at 15.30 and returns from Rijeka at 0500hrs. Single tickets cost around €20.
